Most people only ever have used one or two major products. I have also used BackupExec didn't like We're still partial to Symantec Backup Exec.
Not a bad pricepoint too. System Center Data Protection Manager is good for Microsoft shops, and like Michael said, it normally comes cheaper than a lot of the competition. Yellowbus Solutions Ltd is an IT service provider. We run a combination of Acronis and backup exec. I make complete images of smaller servers and the C of the larger servers. In test restoring to virtual servers this has worked flawless.
Pretty expensive though. It performs disk-to-disk backup, then on the weekends I have it do long term backups to an external hard drive that gets switched out on Mondays I use FireStreamer from CristaLink to show the external hard drive to DPM as a tape. Does it's job unless I don't assign enough hard drive space for a job or once in a while I get some Volume Shadow Service errors, where the server being backed up need restarted don't think I can blame DPM on that, it's VSS that's messing up somewhere, but this is a pretty rare thing.
Nice, thanks for the info. It sucks that it only does tape and you need to purchase a 3rd party license to work with other storage media. I was looking at FireStreamer licensing, is it per server being backed up or per backup server? Just the server that has FireStreamer installed, so just one for one DPM server to backup to non-tape media.
Yah I wish they would have added that in standard, but FireStreamer is a one-time purchase, and it's not too bad. I found them through Microsoft's website as a partner, so I guess they can be trusted well enough :.
Iron Mountain has several solutions that are geared towards enterprises with large amounts of data to be stored. CO, thats pretty cheap.
Monthly backups come back until next year and the yearly backup doesn't come back. I've only ever used Veritas Netbackup. It's pretty good. Not the best product on the market, but suffices. Tech support is terrible and getting worse. Ended up spending more time fixing the database then doing restores. When it works, it is ok though.
Tivoli - This isn't a bad product if you can afford it. Performance is good, particularly over a WAN link. Product features and support for commercial applications is lagging though. Licensing is extremely expensive. Get ready to pay for this product each year. Also, the product itself isn't very easy to use. Reduce unhappy customers so as to improve the satisfaction of users and clients.
