All of which should be doable during one Weekend but I am a Coward Once you move the roles away, you have days to get rid of the SBS box or it will start shutting down every hour on you.

I knew there was a time limit on SBS once the roles were moved, but found conflicting information online on how long. Not that it matters. I just want to get the DC moved to the box before the box crashes. I've already had discussions with the client about the next server. Right now, they are evaluating some LOB software.

Unfortunately, the new server will not be deployed until September at the earliest. That's why I need this "band aid" fix. That old SBS box scares the hell out of me being 10 years old and a single sata hdd. If yes, maybe plan on migrating their email, if not then promote the Server R2 server to a Domain controller and transfer the FSMO roles when ready. Not really concerned about the 21 days. Thankfully, there are only 8 client computers to worry about. Once I know all is working properly should only take a couple days , I plan on shutting down the SBS box.

Best Answer. Verify your account to enable IT peers to see that you are a professional. That is not correct at all. You need Windows Server R2, and I will be suprised if you can purchase it anymore, although you might be able as part of an Open License Agreement.

Another possibility is that they might support it on Server or Server R2, as they have both been out for some time. By "you need", I am suggesting an additional windows server in the SBS domain. Can you give us links to the documentation for the procedure you are following?

What, exactly, are you doing? SBS was never Server R2, despite the similarity in names. Just had a chat with one of the software reps, who had very little to say about "exacts". Kimberly: Andrew, we have designed and tested software on R2. Now, we cant support Widnows as we have not designed or tested our software on that release.

We do not provide support if the software wasn't installed on the appropriate version of windows. I would also make sure, before spending any more capital, that this is all you need If you need anything else, now is the time to find that out.

To clarify, theres no way of "upgrading" our current box to the R2, correct? I don't believe we have another server box, but definitly seems like a reasonable option. I've been trying to upgrade to R2 for a couple hours now, to no avail. At first I thought it was some of the required "Server Tools" for R2, but after I got those installed I hit another wall. While running the "Install Windows Small Business Server R2" I get an error that stops the installations from continuing any further.
